History: 1616 was the year when for the first time a non-aborigine came to Australia, the explorer who did that was Dick Hartong. Also a great man named Cpt. James Cook who was on his way home from a trip on the pacific ocean came to Australia A few years later. He had no idea about the country or the people who lived there. He arrived in Australian mark. He found out that he could get a lot of money out of the people who lived there. He went back home and told about his great discovery. In 1788 he went back with a slave ship. They landed once again and “kidnapped” the residents to bring them home to use them as slaves. In the year 1850 Australia got “sliced” and divided to several different parts. And it was not until the year 1901 that Australia became an independent country.
In 1851 gold was found in Australia and people from all different countries came to Australia to get what they possibly could. This made the population much bigger. From the year 1788 when there were only about 750 000 citizen to the year 1860 when there were 1 000 000. Every year it got bigger and bigger. From the year 1616 the original citizens of Australia haven't been alone and they have always had to share their country. They have almost nothing left for them selves now, just some desert and a national park.
The capitol of Australia is called Canberra, but the largest city is Sydney. The current population of Australia is 21.5 million inhabitants. Their major language is English, and they have Australian dollars as currency. Queen Elisabeth II has the symbolic leadership of the country, but is represented by the governor-general Quentin Bryce.
